How often should you clean your carpet?
A practical schedule for Hong Kong homes and offices, based on who uses the room, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
The honest answer is: it depends on who walks on it. A guest room with one visitor a year and a hallway used by two dogs are not the same carpet, even if they came off the same roll.
Here is a starting point that you can adjust.
A simple schedule for homes
| Situation | Vacuum | Professional clean |
|---|---|---|
| Low-use room, adults only | Weekly | Every 12 to 18 months |
| Typical family home | Twice a week | Every 12 months |
| Children or one pet | Two to three times a week | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Several pets, or anyone with allergies | Most days | Every 3 to 6 months |
These are rules of thumb and not hard limits. Many carpet makers also publish their own guidance, and that takes priority, particularly if a warranty is involved.
Why vacuuming matters more than you think
Most carpet soil is dry particles, and much of it is sharp. Each footstep grinds that grit against the fibres and wears them down. The grey look in a walkway is partly dirt, and partly fibres that have been scratched.
Good vacuuming removes this before it does damage. Go slowly, because several slow passes pick up far more than one fast one. Clean or replace the filter, too. A clogged vacuum does little.
The US Environmental Protection Agency's older dust mite guidance suggested vacuuming carpet and fabric furnishings at least once a week, and a machine with a high-efficiency filter may help.
The Hong Kong factor
Humidity affects this more than people expect. Allergy organisations generally recommend keeping relative humidity at about 50% or lower for dust mite control, and our spring air can stay well above that.
If you have carpet in a damp room, consider cleaning a little more often, and put your money into a dehumidifier first. See carpet care in humid weather.
Timing is worth thinking about too. Autumn usually brings drier air, so a clean in October or November tends to dry faster than one in March. The Hong Kong Observatory notes that humidity typically falls in autumn under the dry monsoon and climbs again in spring.
When to clean regardless of the calendar
- A spill or accident should be treated right away. See how to remove common carpet stains.
- The carpet smells stale on humid days.
- Walkways look darker than the rest, even after vacuuming.
- You are moving in or out. See carpet cleaning when moving flat.
Can you clean a carpet too often?
Yes, though it is less about frequency than doing it badly. Leftover detergent attracts dirt, and repeated over-wetting can cause problems. A properly rinsed, properly dried carpet is not harmed by regular cleaning.
What about offices?
Office schedules depend on foot traffic, and it is more useful to clean by zone than to clean the whole floor. See office carpet maintenance.
