Rug cleaning in Hong Kong

Careful cleaning for wool, silk and hand-knotted rugs, as well as everyday machine-made rugs. We start by checking dyes, weave and fringe.

A rug is not a small carpet

Fitted carpet has a synthetic backing and is usually machine made. A hand-knotted rug has wool or silk pile knotted onto cotton or wool foundations, often with natural or older dyes. Water behaves very differently in each. That is why treating a rug as a small carpet is how good rugs get ruined.

Common problems we look for

  • Dye bleed. Reds and dark blues in particular can run into neighbouring colours.
  • Shrinkage and buckling. Wool and cotton foundations can react to wetting and uneven drying.
  • Browning. Wool or cotton can brown or yellow when slow to dry or exposed to the wrong chemistry.
  • Hidden soil. Hand-knotted rugs can hold a surprising amount of dry grit at the base of the pile.
  • Moth and damp damage. Both are common where rugs sit under furniture or stay rolled up in Hong Kong's humidity.

Which rugs we handle

Rug Typical approach
Machine-made synthetic Often on site, with extraction
Machine-made wool Lower temperature and wool-safe products
Hand-knotted wool (Persian, Afghan, Pakistani and oriental rugs) Dye testing and gentle cleaning, off site where appropriate
Silk, wool-and-silk, and antique pieces Assessed individually, as we may recommend a specialist
Viscose or "art silk" Assessed individually, as it is very sensitive to water
Flatweaves and kilims Dye testing, as colours are often more prone to run

If your rug is particularly valuable or has been restored, tell us. If it is outside what we should handle, we will say so.

How we approach a rug

  1. Inspect the weave, fibre, dyes, fringe, previous repairs and any existing damage.
  2. Test each colour for stability.
  3. Remove dry soil before any water touches it.
  4. Clean with a method suited to the rug.
  5. Dry quickly and evenly, with good airflow, keeping it flat.
  6. Finish by grooming the pile and checking the fringe.

Keeping a rug in good shape

Rotate it every so often so that it wears evenly. Keep it out of strong sun. Vacuum without a beater bar, and never leave it rolled up in a damp cupboard. Our wool and oriental rug care guide has more.

For pricing, send a photo and the rug's dimensions, or read about what affects the cost.

Common questions

Can a rug be pressure washed?

We do not recommend it. Pressure washing can force soil deeper, damage fibres and foundations, and make dyes run, and drying a saturated rug in Hong Kong is hard. Please do not try it on a hand-knotted rug.

Can you clean a Persian rug in my home?

Sometimes, but a hand-knotted rug often does better off site, where it can be dusted, washed and dried properly. We will advise you after seeing it.

Can you repair my rug too?

This site covers cleaning. If you have damage such as worn fringe or holes, show us and we will tell you whether we can help or if you need a rug restorer.

How do I know if my rug is hand-knotted?

Turn it over. A hand-knotted rug shows its pattern clearly on the back, with slightly irregular knots and a fringe that is part of the foundation. A glued canvas backing means it was not hand-knotted.
